Roop Kumar Rathod

Roop Kumar is the son of the late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod, a classical luminary who is an exponent of the rare Dhrupad style of singing. Roop Kumar began his training at the tender age of four under his father and later with Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan of the Kirana, school of music. At the age of eighteen he became the most sought after tabla player accompanying leading singers throughout India, on recordings and nationwide tours. However by the early 80’s his talent for singing and composing was recognised with the release of this debut album ‘Parwaaz’ a collection of new compositions and traditional ghazals in which Roop Kumar composed, sang, and accompanied himself on the tabla. ‘Parwaaz’ was followed up with several solo albums and duets with his wife Sunali. He has also collaborated on a jazz album with the renowned percussionist, Trilok Gurtu ‘The Beat of Love’, (2001), and has accompanied him in concerts across the globe.

The Bollywood music composers Laxmikant and Pyarelal introduced Roop Kumar to playback singer for Bollywood films in the film ‘Angaar’ (1992). He followed this up with a number of film songs with the same music composers. However Roop Kumar was finally established as a Bollywood playback singer in 1997 with the hit film ‘Border’ (Anu Malik) in which he sang ‘To Chalun’ and the award winning ‘Sandesein Aate Hain’. He has subsequently sung under various top composers in a wide variety of films for instance ‘Hero Hindustani’, ‘Godmother’, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Veer Zara’, ‘Yuvraaj’, ‘Anwar’, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and under A. R. Rahman for ‘Thakshak’.

Sunali Rathod

Sunali Rathod began her musical journey at the age of ten, under the guidance of Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, who taught her the intricacies of Indian classical music. She was also fortunate to learn from the late Ustad Fayyaz Ahmed Khan and Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan from the Kirana School of Music. Her base training in Indian classical music enables her to effortlessly switch between various musical genres, be it a ‘geet’, a ‘ghazel’ or a ‘tappa’.

In 1986 Sunali was honoured with the Best Ghazal singer award for her debut album ‘Aaghaaz’. This established her status within the ghazal arena and lead to numerous successful tours both in India and abroad. She then went on to release a succession of successful solo ghazel albums such as ‘Dil-Kash’, ‘Khazana’ and ‘Shabnam’ as well as a bhajan album titled ‘Bhajan Kalash’ and a Gujarati album titled ‘Mogra Na Phool’ which was composed by Purushottam Upadhyay. Apart from ghazals and bhagans Sunali has also lent her melodious voice to television serials such as ‘Jaan-E-Alam’, ‘Bahadur Shah Zafar’ and ‘Guftegu’, which was composed by the Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Then in 2007 Sunali released her debut solo pop album titled ‘This Is Me – Sunali’. The album was produced by the renowned Leslie Lewis and draws on jazz and hip hop influences.
